World Alzheimer’s Month: Caring for Cognitive Health in Older Adults

"Mom, I'm home."

When that familiar greeting is met with a blank stare, you know that memory is being slowly stolen by disease. Many families are living through the heartbreak of Alzheimer’s. Too often, relatives dismiss early signs as "just getting old and forgetful," missing the crucial window for intervention.

Alzheimer’s disease, commonly known as senile dementia, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an insidious onset. Memory loss is only one of its early signals; over time, it gradually impairs cognition, emotion, and the ability to carry out daily activities, placing a heavy burden on both the elderly individual and their family. September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and this year’s theme is "Identify Early, Preserve More Memories."

I. Warning Signs: Don’t Mistake These for Normal Aging

1.Memory decline that disrupts daily life – Frequently forgetting recent events, repeatedly asking the same questions, and misplacing items just moments after putting them down. In contrast, longterm memory may remain surprisingly clear.

2.Difficulty completing familiar tasks – Struggling with routine chores such as cooking, housekeeping, or managing finances.

3.Language and communication problems – Trouble finding the right words or expressing thoughts clearly.

4.Disorientation in time and place – Losing track of dates, seasons, and locations; getting lost in familiar neighborhoods.

5.Changes in mood and personality – Becoming suspicious, irritable, apathetic, or anxious – a marked shift from their former self.

6.Poor judgment – Easily falling for scams or making uncharacteristically unwise decisions.

A helpful distinction: Normal aging may involve occasional forgetfulness, but the person can usually recall the information later. In cognitive impairment, forgetting is recurrent and persistent, and the individual is often unaware of the problem – which is why family members need to stay observant.

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, but early recognition, timely medical evaluation, and proper intervention can significantly slow the decline and preserve quality of life for older adults.

II. Friendly Reminders

Adults aged 65 and older should have a cognitive health screening every year. Those with a family history of dementia, hypertension, diabetes, sleep disorders, or depression are at higher risk and need even more regular assessments.

If an older family member shows any of the above warning signs, do not avoid seeking help. Visit a clinic for a professional evaluation. In many regions, free initial screening is available for all individuals over 65.

Everyday brain- healthy habits:

1.Stay physically active – Aim for moderate aerobic exercise each week (brisk walking, tai chi, etc.) and include some strength training.

2.Eat a balanced diet – Emphasize vegetables, high- quality protein, and limit oil and sugar. Keep meals varied and nutritious.

3.Keep your mind engaged – Read, play chess, socialize, and have regular conversations with others.

4.Manage chronic conditions – Control blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipids. Address hearing loss, sleep issues, and mood disorders like depression or anxiety.

5.Offer companionship and understanding – Be patient, avoid criticism, and provide emotional support. Caregivers should also take care of their own physical and mental well- being.

Protecting memory is not just about safeguarding our elders – it is about protecting entire families. Alzheimer’s disease calls for understanding and acceptance from all of society, and we must work together to eliminate the stigma associated with dementia. Do not treat forgetfulness as inevitable. Stay observant, show compassion, and act early. With timely prevention and care, we can keep the warmth of memories alive for years to come.
